Description:
MSJ is an alternative continuation high school, serving approximately 350 to 400 students that are referred from the four traditional high schools in the Palm Springs Unified District. When students become credit deficient at the traditional high school, they may be brought before a district panel to determine whether or not placement at MSJ is appropriate. Enrollment is voluntary and students enter the school as openings become available. Students may exit at the end of any semester or on the day they meet the district's graduation requirements. The smaller school size provides an atmosphere in which students who are "at-risk" can connect and build rapport with the MSJ teachers and staff. These positive relationships provide them with the support they need to be academically and socially successful.
We have an excellent academic program here at MSJ. In 2014, we received a six year accreditation renewal for our school's programs by the Accrediting Commission for the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (acswasc.org). In 2015 we were named a California Model Continuation High School. In 2009, MSJ was designated as a "School of Excellence" by the California Continuation Education Association (CCEA), in partnership with the California Department of Education (CDE). Our students must meet the same graduation requirements as those in the traditional high schools. We also offer a range of unique elective opportunities, including team sports, video production, chess, art, computer game design, poetry, psychology, knitting, and leadership, among others.
